Yellowstone Hydrothermal Explosion Closes Biscuit Basin, Tourists Capture Eruption on Video

Biscuit Basin Shuts Down After Blast

Yellowstone National Park's Biscuit Basin area has been closed following a hydrothermal explosion that occurred on Tuesday morning, according to the park.

Caught on Video

Several tourists captured the event on video, showcasing the surprise blast of rock, water, and steam that sent dozens running for safety.

Small Thermal Features Impacted

Biscuit Basin contains a variety of thermal features, including Silver Globe Spring. However, unlike Old Faithful, many of the features in Biscuit Basin are small gem-like encrusted pools and geysers.

Unusual Biscuit-Like Deposits

According to the park's website, the basin is named for the unusual biscuit-like deposits that used to surround Sapphire Pool.
